About Tamarac FL
Tamarac Florida is situated ideally in central Broward County with easy access to major highways, shopping, entertainment, recreation, and the Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood Airport, Port Everglades, and railway stations. Incorporated in 1963 by developer Kenneth E. Behring, Tamarac has grown from an active retirement community to a city of approximately 59,000. The average age of the residents is now 45, and the city offers greater diversity than it did before.
The city’s new motto, “The City for Your Life” indicates that Tamarac is your city when you are born there, but also that you can have the quality and type of life you deserve for your lifetime.
Things to Do in Tamarac
Tamarac has several parks with amenities designed for family activities. Sunset Point Park features a walking trail, a small amphitheater, and a playground. Caporella Park has picnic tables, grills, playgrounds, and a lake with a pier for fishing. The Tamarac Sports Complex has a playground, picnic tables, tennis and basketball courts, baseball, softball, and soccer fields, as well as a hockey rink.
The Tamarac Theater of Performing Arts boasts of having some of South Florida’s live stage entertainment. Being conveniently located, Tamarac offers easy access to entertainment in nearby towns like the Fort Lauderdale Historical Museum, The Plantation Historical Museum, and many others.
Tamarac, FL Schools
Two public schools opened in 1899. In 1915 the Broward County School district was established. By 1953, enrollment in the upper grades had grown to the point where a second high school was open to students. In 1977 magnet programs were introduced, and by 1997 Charter Schools were opened.
Broward County Schools (BCS) provides oversight to the schools attended by the younger residents of Tamarac. With a mix of more than 258,000 students in both urban and suburban schools, BCS is the sixth largest public school district and the largest, fully-accredited public school district in the US.
