About Miramar FL
Miramar, Florida was incorporated May 26, 1955 with less than 200 residents. The Governor appointed the City's first Mayor and City Council who were sworn in less than one month later and served until January 1959 when the first election was held. It was the first Mayor of Miramar who gave the city its name. “Miramar” means “Look at the Sea” in Spanish. In pre-Castro Cuba, Miramar was an exclusive suburb of Havana. The City seal is inscribed with the motto “Beauty and Progress".
Miramar is one of the largest cities in Broward County. The population was estimated at 106,590 as of 2006, and the city is part of the South Florida metropolitan area, which is home to five and a half million people. Major airports and seaports, schools and colleges, shopping and cultural centers, and, of course, beaches are all located within a short driving distance of Miramar.
The Broward County School District over sees the schools in Miramar which include 11 elementary schools, 3 middle schools and 3 high schools. There is also the Ana G. Mendez University, and a charter school, as well as a special needs school in Miramar. Three major hospitals are within a five-mile radius of the city limits.
As a family-oriented community, Miramar offers 22 neighborhood parks, a regional park, and 9 community parks within the city. Activities for sports enthusiasts include baseball, baseball, football, soccer, handball, racquetball, tennis, volleyball and jogging. The City’s professional recreational staff plans several year-round events. These activities are suitable for everyone from the youngest to the oldest citizens. Some of these events are held at the Miramar Civic Center which is the site of yearly events such as Caribe Fest held in September and October's Halloween Masquerade Dance.
The Town Center, which houses a new City Hall and public library, also offers retail and residential components in a park-like setting with waterfront views. This complex is designed to include the Miramar Cultural Arts Center which is a venue for artists, and where teachers and students can perform, rehearse and exhibit their arts.
